Notable concerts and recitals fill fall schedule

A full slate of Department of Music events this fall includes recitals, master classes and numerous other performances by department faculty and guest artists.

October’s schedule begins with Horn Day on Oct. 6, including a daylong workshop and master classes hosted by John David Smith, UD assistant professor of music, and featuring special guest Julie Landsman, principal horn of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. An evening recital will be given by Smith and pianist Julie Nishimura, instructor in music and faculty accompanist.

The month continues with performances by such University groups as the Wind Ensemble Oct. 14, jazz ensembles Oct. 15 and 18, Symphony Orchestra Oct. 19 (with the Serafin Quartet ) and 21, Percussion/Marimba ensembles and Delaware Steel Oct. 22 and the Concert Choir and University Singers Oct. 24. Faculty violinist Xiang Gao will give a violin studio recital Oct. 20, and guest artist Ernesto Tamayo will give a guitar recital Oct. 30 and a master class the next day.

November events on campus include Choralfest on Nov. 10; “Still Breathing,” a concert by the University’s contemporary music ensemble and featuring works by composers who have taught in the music department, Nov. 11; the UD Opera on Nov. 16 and 17; and guest artist Ben Toth in a percussion recital Nov. 19.

The Chamber Orchestra makes its campus debut Nov. 30 with works by Bach, Schubert and Aaron Copland.

December kicks off with a choral celebration by the Concert Choir, University Singers and Chorale on Dec. 1. The next day, the Symphony Orchestra and Schola Cantorum will present a masterpiece of religious spirituality, Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem. 

Other performances in early December will feature the Jazz Chamber Ensemble, Percussion/Marimba ensembles, Delaware Steel and the Wind Ensemble, and the fall season concludes with a Dec. 5 concert by the Graduate String Quartet.
