At the top of their games

Lindsey Shover, a stellar goalkeeper for the women’s soccer team, and Harding Nana, a two-time All-Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball player who ranked among the NCAA leaders in both scoring and rebounding the last two seasons, were named UD’s outstanding senior athletes for 2005-06.

Shover was the first women’s soccer player to be named the top senior athlete, an award determined by a vote of the head coaches of the 12 women’s varsity sports. A native of Lancaster, Pa., Shover was a two-time captain and four-year starter who helped lead UD to a combined record of 38-26-8 and three trips to the Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament.

In 2005 she helped the Hens post a record 10-5-4, earn a regional top 10 ranking and advance to the CAA semifinals for the first time in school history. She set the UD record for career save percentage (.841), ranks No. 2 all-time in minutes played (4,828), saves (244) and goals against average (0.86) and ranks No. 3 in shutouts (20).

An honor student as a health and physical education major, Shover was named to the CAA Academic Honor Roll three times and was a nominee for the College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-America team.

Nana, a 6-foot, 8-inch forward, is a native of Douala, Cameroon. He attended Virginia Tech before transferring to UD, where he played three productive seasons and now is hoping to earn a tryout with a National Basketball Association team.

The leadership major was the first basketball player since Mike Pegues in 1999-2000 to earn the prestigious outstanding senior male athlete award, which is determined by a vote of the head coaches of the 11 varsity sports.

Nana is just the fourth player in UD history to score more than 1,300 points and collect 700 rebounds. In 2005-06, he scored 19 points per game and had 10.9 rebounds per game, with the latter tops in the CAA and ninth in NCAA Division I.
