Students charged in armed robbery
Four University students were arrested by Newark Police on March 5 and charged with several counts of first-degree robbery, burglary and related offenses after an early morning incident at an off-campus apartment of two other students. Police said the victims were confronted in the apartment by masked individuals, one armed with a shotgun.
Arrested were Demetrice Alexander, Daniel Jones, Jeffery Robinson and Tyrone Heggins. Three were members of the UD football team, Alexander a sophomore linebacker, Jones a sophomore running back and Robinson a junior defensive back. Heggins was a senior.
“The University is very concerned about the alleged actions of these students,” Cynthia Cummings, associate vice president for campus life, said at the time of the arrests. “We must ensure that they pose no threat to members of the University community. Therefore, the Office of Judicial Affairs has taken the necessary steps to expel the students from the campus. This action will remain in effect until the charges are dismissed or until the students are acquitted of the charges.”
Head football coach K. C. Keeler and the University announced the immediate suspension of the three players from the team, and all four were expelled from the University.
