Studying this summer around the globe
Discovery Abroad Research Expeditions (DARE)

A new program within CFIS in which faculty involve undergraduate students in inquiry-based learning in an international setting

  1. London: Tammy Anderson, associate professor of sociology, and Daniel Green, associate professor of political science and international relations, with three undergrads studied the significance of electronic dance music on youth and culture.

  2. Norway: Leta Adjadir, associate professor of health, nutrition and exercise sciences, and Evelyn Hayes, professor of nursing, with four nursing students and one nutrition major, analyzed data on pregnant smokers in this country, which is identified as a global leader in low infant mortality.

  3. Turkey: Matt Robinson, associate professor of health, nutrition and exercise sciences, with three students compared sports structure and governance there with the U.S. system.

  4. Guatemala: April Veness, associate professor of geography, with one undergraduate interviewed extended family members of Guatemalans who have migrated to Delaware to work in the poultry industry.

Undergraduate Research Program

  1. London: seven undergrads worked with Imperial College faculty in computer science, bioengineering, mechanical, space and chemical engineering, materials science and Earth science and engineering.

  2. Costa Rica: one agricultural sciences student studied forest ecology and sustainable development.

  3. Bangladesh: one anthropology student studied changing family structure and empowerment of women in the rural area (with additional funding from DARE).

  4. China: one undergraduate researcher studied mechanical engineering.

Center for International Studies (CFIS) summer courses

  1. Chur, Switzerland, and Tuscany area of Italy: 15 students took a food and wine tour of Germany and Tuscany with Robert Nelson, associate professor, and George Conrade, assistant professor of hotel, restaurant and institutional management (HRIM).

  2. London: 13 students studying Dickens' novel Our Mutual Friend visited various locations in the novel and took a second course on the British press with Ben Yagoda, professor of English.

  3. Ireland: 14 students studied the history and culture of Ireland from Dublin to Galway with Kevin Kerrane, professor of English.

  4. Florence: 12 art students received intensive instruction in painting from Larry Holmes, professor, and Rene Marquez, assistant professor, both in the Department of Fine Arts and Visual Communication.
  5. London: 30 visual communications students visited creative advertising agencies, photographers, design-related museums and graphic design studios with Ray Nichols and Bill Deering, faculty in the Department of Fine Arts and Visual Communication.

  6. Kobe, Madrid, Granada, Paris and Rome: 111 students toured and practiced their language skills in Japan, Spain, France and Italy with faculty from the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.

  7. Athens: Five HRIM students interned at the Olympic Village with Aramark.
