KUDOS FOR DISTANCE-LEARNING INTERNSHIP

The CHNS Dietetic Internship Program has been honored by the U.S. Distance Learning Association with its 2003 Award for Excellence in Distance Learning Programming, in the "telehealth" division.

In accepting the award last spring, Charlene Hamilton, who then was a professor of nutrition and dietetics and the internship program's director, said she was "thrilled" to receive the honor. "We feel that it is recognition that we are on the right track with our use of distance learning," Hamilton, who has since retired, said.

The association described the internship as "an outstanding Internet-based program that prepares students, especially those living in rural areas, to become registered dietitians." It noted that the program has developed partnerships with other universities and state health departments, enabling interns to live and work far from the UD campus if they choose.

"The program serves as a model for Internet-based programs," the association said. "The program has received outstanding evaluations from both students and preceptors."

The internship includes more than 900 hours of supervised clinical work, in which the students and their preceptors check in with CHNS faculty via computer.
