Citizenship endowment to honor Jim Soles

Students, colleagues and friends of Jim Soles, Alumni Distinguished Professor of Political Science and International Relations, are working to establish the $1 million James R. Soles Citizenship Endowment at the University of Delaware, and to date, they have raised about $150,000.

The endowment is being created in recognition and appreciation of the veteran political science professor's distinguished career as a teacher, mentor and model of citizenship.

There are three distinct but related programs contained within the citizenship endowment, which will provide financial support to encourage future generations of students and faculty members to seek careers in public service. Those are the James R. Soles Professorship in Political Science, the James R. Soles Undergraduate Citizenship Stipends and the James R. Soles Graduate Fellowships in Political Science.

The professorship, for which $250,000 is being raised, will support a faculty member in the Department of Political Science and International Relations who is committed to teaching, to students and to civic involvement.

Citizenship stipends, for which $500,000 is being raised, will provide funds for undergraduate political science students involved in research focused on civic participation. It will also support students seeking practical internships in public service through government or private agencies.

The fellowships, for which $250,000 is being raised, will support graduate students who are preparing for careers in public service.

Soles joined the University of Delaware faculty in 1968. He has twice received the University's Excellence-in-Teaching Award, and has also received the University Award for Excellence-in-Undergraduate Advisement. *
