The College of Marine Studies:
A Voyage to Discovery

The marine environment is an abiding source of fascination, wonder, and discovery. Beaches are the leading tourism destination in the United States, drawing some 180 million visitors each year. And with more than half the U.S. population residing within 50 miles of the coast, the ocean has long been a significant part of many of our lives.

During those idyllic trips to the beach, you may not have thought about the ocean’s effect on global climate, or the diversity of plant and animal life in coastal ecosystems, or the political difficulties involved in managing ocean resources. Nonetheless, each of these is a striking example of the ocean’s larger role in the health of our civilization and our planet. And each is an example of an area of inquiry in which the College of Marine Studies has played a pioneering role.

The five-year Campaign for Delaware will help us build on our pioneering reputation in the following concrete ways:

  • by providing fellowships for talented graduate students,
  • by recognizing and supporting outstanding faculty,
  • by promoting discovery-based learning opportunities for students,
  • by enhancing research and teaching facilities and technologies, and
  • by supporting innovative education, research, and outreach initiatives.
