The Campaign for Delaware:
Positioning the College for the Challenges Ahead

The need for ocean research has never been more urgent. Major challenges to the health of our oceans and coasts must be addressed quickly if we are to prevent further ecological damage. At the same time, the impact of ocean research on human welfare—in the form of improved climate prediction, more abundant fisheries, and new medicines or other useful products—is potentially very high. The College of Marine Studies is already well positioned to make major contributions in addressing these challenges and opportunities.

With the Campaign for Delaware, we aim to build on the College’s academic and research programs that are already among the finest in the world. Expanded fellowship opportunities will enable us to attract an elite corps of graduate scholars who will not only contribute their talents to our faculty’s outstanding research, but will also advance our reputation through their achievements as alumni. Faculty endowments will enable us to recognize and retain our most gifted professors as well as compete with other top marine institutions for the most promising young faculty. And funds for equipment support will ensure that we have state-of-the-art tools to carry out our educational and research objectives. To help meet these needs, now and in the future, we are seeking a minimum of $5.7 million through the Campaign for Delaware.

We are turning to you, our alumni, friends, and corporate partners, with the understanding that your support is crucial to our continued development. Scientific research is by nature somewhat unpredictable. But through careful investment in appropriate human and material resources, our success is virtually assured. Moreover, investment in scientific research often pays off in unexpected ways. By investing in the College of Marine Studies, you can become our partner on an odyssey of discovery that holds both the promise of much-needed solutions and the possibility of exciting new benefits.
