The College of Marine Studies

Sustaining A Legacy

Dean's Message

Many metaphors may be aptly used to describe the sea. Depending on your perspective, it is a cradle of life or a force of destruction, a familiar playground or a mysterious frontier, a weather maker or a climate moderator, a cornucopia or a dumping ground. Overlaying each of these comparisons, however, is a growing awareness that the ocean has a profound impact on each and every inhabitant of the planet. And the way we treat our marine resources today will have a significant bearing on our planet for decades—and perhaps centuries—to come.

At the College of Marine Studies, we are committed to advancing the knowledge, wise use, and conservation of global, estuarine, and coastal ocean environments. Whether we’re examining the impact of land-use patterns on coastal waterways, searching for new and useful products from the sea, or assessing the implications of fishery management techniques, the College has an important role to play in exploring and protecting the marine environment, both close to home and around the globe.

With the help of a number of donors, we’ve come a long way in just three decades, staking a place among the best marine programs in the country. We don’t intend to rest on our laurels, however. If we are to remain among the nation’s elite oceanographic institutions and aspire to even greater levels of achievement, we must attract and retain the most talented students and faculty. We must provide our students with extensive opportunities for field and laboratory work. And we must provide the resources, facilities, and technological tools required for cutting-edge research.

Through the Campaign for Delaware, we hope to secure at least $5.7 million for the College’s future growth and development. By helping us achieve that goal, you have the opportunity to take part in the exploration of our planet’s last great frontier. Whether you invest in graduate fellowships, professorships, innovative educational initiatives, or equipment support, you can rest assured that your Campaign gift will have a lasting impact. By helping us prepare tomorrow’s leading marine scientists, educators, and policy specialists—those who will be responsible for protecting a precious natural resource—your gift to the College becomes a legacy for future generations.
