The University of Delaware Library
Sustaining A Legacy |
In recent years, the Library has undergone a dramatic transformation. The advent of powerful new technologies has fostered an unprecedented opportunity to develop and apply new tools for accessing information.
University of Delaware Library users can take advantage of hundreds of computer terminals where a wealth of information is at their fingertips. With a few clicks of the mouse, members of the University community can access the Librarys Web site (www.lib.udel.edu); search DELCAT, the on-line catalog; and peruse the information contained in thousands of on-line newspapers, magazines, and scholarly journals.
In addition, electronic library resources are accessible from any computer on campus and from home. In a sense, every faculty and administrative office and every residence hall room is a branch of the University Library, open almost around the clock. For students burning the midnight oil, this accessibility is a significant benefit.
What does all this technology mean for the future? "It certainly doesnt mean that books are on their way out," says Gregg Silvis, Assistant Director for Library Computing Systems. "What we make available on the computer is and will remain an important complement to the printed word." |
