The University of Delaware Library

Sustaining A Legacy

Director's Message

The University of Delaware Library stands at the intellectual center of the University. As a foundation for research and discovery, it plays a vital role in every degree granted in every academic discipline on the UD campus. From accounting to zoology, the Library serves the changing research and instructional needs of the University community. It makes available new information and new research, as well as collecting and preserving materials of historical significance.

Throughout the University’s history, the Library’s top priority has been to make its ever-expanding resources available to students, faculty, and the national and international scholarly communities. Knowledge is constantly changing, not only within a subject area but also across disciplines, so that research in one discipline often directly affects another. The Library must keep pace; its collections must be enhanced to reflect the latest scholarship, and new collections must be developed to represent new fields of endeavor for the future.

In recent years, the UD Library has undergone a striking revolution. Today, books represent only one component of the Library’s resources. The "digital library" is a convenient phrase that encompasses an array of new technologies and electronic resources that have rapidly become essential to the modern research library. The University of Delaware Library is indeed a "digital library," and our talented and dedicated staff has been innovative in using computer technology to make a broad range of information available to users.

With these technological advances, the quantity of information sources is skyrocketing, doubling every couple of years. The Library seeks to provide the widest possible access to the greatest number of materials. We have a challenging future ahead of us—a future that depends on you. The Library has set a goal of raising at least $12 million through the Campaign for Delaware for a simple reason: library resources are at the very heart of the University’s continued vitality.

Join us today as we set our sights on the future. Help us to meet the challenges ahead as we strive to ensure that the University of Delaware Library continues to provide the best in scholarship, instruction, and service.
