Sustaining A Legacy

Dean's Message

This is an exciting time for Engineering at the University of Delaware. The last decade has been one of significant accomplishment for the College. The number of faculty grew markedly with the strengthening of existing programs and the development of new ones.

Our vision is to be a focal point for science and technology development and for education within the University of Delaware and the State of Delaware, with an impact extending to regional, national, and global dimensions. Within the context of the University as a state-supported, student-centered research university, the first aim of the College is to provide outstanding programs for our undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education students. Our second aim is to be a research leader in advancing the frontiers of engineering and science through increasingly multidisciplinary initiatives. Finally, we aim to serve citizenry and industry as an agent of technological, economic, and educational innovation and advancement.

These are substantial and ambitious goals. We are fortunate that many across campus are busily answering the question: "What makes a good university great?" Part of that answer is obvious as a visitor walks through campus and sees the tremendous improvements to our campus infrastructure and the beauty of its physical features. Another part of the answer lies in the marked improvement of the high school academic records of our entering freshman and the success of our alumni after leaving UD. Our Engineering undergraduates continue to be among the best of those groups, with good representation of both women and traditionally under-represented minorities. The final part of the answer centers on our ability to be among the best teaching and research schools in the country, and I am pleased that we have a talented and able group of College faculty dedicated to achieving that goal.

Although the College has made significant progress over the last decade, we have it within ourselves to do even better. Our efforts and ambitions extend beyond what we have supported thus far, so we must develop appropriate resources to achieve our full potential. These resources include funds for endowed scholarships, graduate fellowships and professorships to help us attract and retain the most gifted students and faculty, and support for the equipment and facilities required for cutting-edge instruction and research. Through the Campaign for Delaware, a $225 million fund-raising initiative, we plan to secure at least $45 million for the future of the College of Engineering. The achievements of our students and programs are facilitated in a very significant way by the support of our alumni and friends. Your continued help is essential to our success.
