Our Mission of Service:
Working for Today, Preparing for Tomorrow

CHEP is busy preparing for the future even as we address the problems of today. Our programs respond to pressing social needs, forging partnerships with individuals and organizations in the community and beyond. As a professional college, we are distinctive in our three-part mission:

  • to generate and synthesize knowledge relevant to the interrelated problems facing individuals, families, schools, communities, and public, private, and nonprofit organizations today and in the future;
  • to utilize this knowledge in the preparation of professionals who will assume leadership positions in our society’s major institutions; and
  • to work in partnership with others to enhance human development across the life span, to improve educational policies and practices, to improve delivery of needed goods and services, and to help formulate effective public policies and sound public management.

We emphasize hands-on learning experiences that immerse students in the practical application of classroom theory. The College’s academic programs—from consumer economics to family and community services, from teacher education to urban affairs and public policy—encourage students to think of knowledge as a tool. What they learn from a classroom lecture or an assigned reading can and must be brought to bear on the challenges facing our nation.

With such a broad commitment to public service, the College’s influence cuts a wide path. Teachers throughout Delaware take advantage of our resources. Decision-makers in the public and private sectors rely on our public policy research. And government leaders work with our faculty and students on topics of importance to the citizens of Delaware and beyond.

In short, the College embraces the responsibility for our future. As an interdisciplinary, professional, service-oriented college, we address some of the central intellectual and social challenges of our time—those affecting each of us as parents, neighbors, consumers, workers, and citizens.
