Dean's Message

At the College of Human Services, Education and Public Policy, we have classrooms filled with students eager to learn and professors conducting groundbreaking research. But we are much more than that. The College is also a roll-up-your-sleeves kind of place, where the energy and expertise of a major research university are used to promote new solutions to some of the most pressing challenges on the public agenda.

We all recognize from our own experience that the concerns facing our nation are deeply interrelated and that no one of them can be effectively addressed apart from the others. The challenges to our schools are significantly affected by the conditions of family life and the environments in which our children are raised. The conditions of family life are in turn affected by the quality of services and opportunities available in our communities and by the effectiveness of our public policies in providing access to these opportunities. Consumer and service institutions depend on a productive workforce, and thus they depend on our schools, communities, and families as well as on public policies that strengthen the commercial environment.

CHEP is redefining how higher education can respond to these challenges. We are dedicated to providing instruction, research, and community service that address these interconnected challenges. Put simply, we are leading the way in promoting an understanding of the world outside the classroom. In many respects, the world outside is our classroom. Through direct experience, we strive to instill in our students the value of community service. When these young men and women cross the threshold of graduation, they are well prepared to shape the future of our state, our region, and our nation.

The Campaign for Delaware is literally charged with the responsibility for our future. We must be able to attract and retain the most gifted students and faculty through endowed scholarships, assistantships, and faculty positions. We must encourage creative and independent thinking in our students through expanded research, service, and internship opportunities. And we must be even more proactive in responding to community needs through innovative educational partnerships. By engaging the support of our friends and alumni, we hope to secure at least $16.3 million for CHEP’s future growth and development during this five-year fund-raising initiative. Please take a few minutes today to learn how you can become a part of our future.
