Sustaining A Legacy

Dean's Message

With roots in the first course in double-entry bookkeeping taught in 1851, the College of Business and Economics has evolved into one of the largest colleges at the University of Delaware. Demand for the College’s programs and graduates is strong—a testament to our ability to lead and to anticipate change. Our success, however, emanates primarily from a belief that people and their ideas are central to all we do.

Today, as in the past, our students are challenged to conceive innovative solutions to new problems. They learn the conceptual foundations of business thought and are then encouraged to question these foundations. They are educated in the latest technologies and then try to find new ways of using these technologies to add value to organizations. They learn about differences in world economies and then work to find ways these differences create economic opportunities. Today’s graduates are well prepared to be leaders in a rapidly changing world.

Central to the College’s tradition of valuing people and their ideas is our faculty. As they actively engage in new ways of thinking about important issues in business and economics, the College’s faculty is definitely having an impact on the way decisions are made in Delaware, the nation, and the world. The success of their students is one of the most visible signs of their belief in people. Their success in research is one of the most visible signs of their commitment to creativity and innovation.

At the College of Business and Economics, we put people and ideas to work in facilitating change throughout the global economy. Our programs are undergoing constant review and revision as a result of discussions with corporate partners about the demands of the workplace. Our faculty is rapidly gaining national recognition for research excellence. We are entering into new partnerships with the public and private sectors. The momentum for reaching higher levels of excellence in the future is strong. Competition for the faculty, students, and resources required to achieve that excellence, however, is tougher than ever before.

Through the Campaign for Delaware, we hope to secure more than $21 million for the College’s future growth and development. By helping us achieve this goal, you have the opportunity to shape the future of business education at the University. Your support will ensure our continued vitality by attracting talented students and faculty who are genuinely committed to people and their ideas. Your support will create an intellectually rich environment of research, experiential learning, study abroad, and innovative programs. And your support will provide the technology and other resources needed to reach our goal of excellence. Whether you invest in scholarships or professorships, innovative educational initiatives or technological support, your Campaign gift to the College of Business and Economics is an investment in the future—an investment in tomorrow’s business leaders and in the promise of new ideas
