If a farmer from the 19th century suddenly found himself transported to a modern agricultural operation, he would certainly notice a few changes. The complex machinery, the advanced pest and disease management strategies, the soil analysis and conservation techniques, and the new varieties of crops made possible by research would likely astonish a visitor from the past.
However, our visitor would certainly relate to the goals of modern-day farmers, which have remained essentially unchanged: to prevent hunger, to see their hard work pay off as profitably as possible, and to enhance the quality of life for their families and communities. A sense of connection to this proud tradition grounds our activities at the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, even as we look to the future.
The Campaign for Delaware will help us build on our long-standing tradition of excellence in the following concrete ways:
- by providing scholarships and fellowships for talented students,
- by recognizing and supporting outstanding faculty,
- by promoting discovery-based learning opportunities for students,
- by enhancing laboratory and educational technologies, and
- by supporting innovative education, research, and outreach initiatives.
