Giving to Delaware
Sustaining a Legacy
In 1743, the renowned colonial scholar Francis Alison, motivated by a lack of educational opportunities for young men of the Mid-Atlantic region, began teaching a dozen or so students at his home in New London, Pennsylvania. His academy finally settled in Newark, Delaware, where in 1769 the school was chartered as the Academy of Newark.

The Reverend Alison’s decision to create his academy represents one of a handful of seminal moments in the University’s history. The Delaware legislature’s charter of 1833, which brought the academy to college status; the designation of the college as a Land Grant institution in 1867; and the decision in 1915 by Pierre S. du Pont to begin his legendary generosity were all similar turning points upon which the future of the University of Delaware hinged.

With the five-year, $225-million Campaign for Delaware, we are enlisting our friends and alumni in an effort to build new legacies for future generations, to ensure that a proud tradition of academic distinction endures.

Specifically, through the Campaign for Delaware, we are striving to surpass the following goals:

  • $50 million for student support
  • $35 million for faculty support
  • $40 million for academic program support
  • $50 million in capital support
  • $50 million in expendable gifts to the University
