Workplace Chemical List

The Delaware Hazardous Chemical Information Act and University of Delaware Policy 7-27 Hazardous Chemical Information require department/units to compile and maintain a Workplace Chemical List(s) which shall contain the following information for each hazardous chemical normally used, handled or stored in the workplace in aggregate quantities which exceed at any time 55 gallons or 500 pounds.

The chemical name, the common name or the CAS number used on the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and the container label, and the manufacturer of the chemical.

The work area in which the hazardous chemical is normally stored or used.

A recent change in state requirements has resulted in the need to report some chemicals kept in quantities smaller than those listed above. The list includes a Threshold Planning Quantity (TPQ), or the amount which requires reporting. If any of the listed chemicals are handled or stored in the workplace in aggregate quantities equal to or greater than the TPQ, you must include them in your report. In addition, MSDSs should also be referenced to determine if any of the listed chemicals are components of any chemical products that are handled or stored. The same information as requested above for each chemical or chemical product over the TPQ should be included in your report. To receive a copy of this list of chemicals along with their TPQs, please contact the Department of Occupational Health and Safety.

The Workplace Chemical List(s) should be prepared for individual work areas and must be posted in an area readily accessible to students and employees.

The Act also requires Workplace Chemical List(s) to be updated at least annually. Copies of your Workplace Chemical List(s) must be submitted to the Department of Occupational Health and Safety or a statement certifying hazardous chemicals are not used, handled or stored in the quantities specified by February 2, 1998. Failure to comply with Workplace Chemical Lists(s) requirements can result in civil penalties to the University.

If you would like to receive a copy of your department's previous Workplace Chemical List or if you have questions please contact Dave Levandoski at Davelev@udel.edu or call 831-8274.
