Curriculum: Community Elective
Objectives and Activities
- Establish professional relationships in the practice of dietetics.
a. Interview selected individuals within the organization regarding roles and responsibilities.
- Become familiar with the overall goals, objectives and functions of the agency.
a. Review the policy and procedure manual and the mission statement of the organization.
b. Review programs, service and educational materials. Create a resource file.
- Become familiar with clients of different age and health status.
a. Identify nutritional needs of the target population.
b. Identify how a client can access the services provided by the agency and what costs are involved.
- Develop group or individual programs for health promotion, maintenance, treatment and rehabilitation.
a. Observe preceptor conducting counseling sessions and/or educational program. This could be individual counseling
sessions, group education programs or other program offered by the organization.
- Develop and deliver nutrition intervention programs to the community and to professionals.
a. Assist preceptor in a project that will enhance the services of the agency. Examples include: needs assessment, surveys,
and educational tool, or seminar for a specific population.
Evaluation Methods
- Daily journals
- Evaluation of projects by internship faculty
- Ongoing feedback on performance by preceptor
- Performance evaluation, final
*Denotes assignment. Directions for assignments will be provided to interns and preceptors. All internship assignments will be submitted to internship faculty for evaluation via an on-line course management system.
