Welcome to the Microbial Ecology Research Laboratory

The Microbial Ecology Research Lab is an interdisciplinary group of researchers that study the ecology of microbial communities in a diverse range of environments by combining physiological, biochemical and molecular approaches.

MERL researchers have unique access to study environments around the world.  Our primary research facility is located at the University of Delaware, College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment in Lewes, Delaware, USA. Our sister laboratory is located at the University of Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand.

Environmental systems currently being explored by MERL researchers range from coastal and estuarine systems to deep sea hydrothermal vents and Antarctic dry valleys.

We invite you to browse our current research projects.
