Carnegie Taxonomy

Important Information

In 2005, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Higher Education instituted a new Basic Classification taxonomy of higher education institutions. Since the 2005 Delaware Study, we have utilized this classification grouping for Research Universities, Doctoral Universities, Comprehensive (Master's) Colleges and Universities, and Baccalaureate Colleges. Specifically, the classifications are:

  • Research institutions, including:
    • (RVH) Research Universities – Very High Research Activity
    • (RH) Research Universities – High Research Activity
  • Doctoral institutions, including:
    • (DR) Doctoral/Research Universities
  • Comprehensive institutions, including:
    • (ML) Master’s Colleges & Universities – Larger Programs
    • (MM) Master’s Colleges & Universities – Medium Programs
    • (MS) Master’s Colleges & Universities – Smaller Programs
  • Baccalaureate institutions, including:
    • (BAS) Baccalaureate Colleges – Arts & Sciences
    • (BD) Baccalaureate Colleges – Diverse Fields
    • (BA) Baccalaureate/Associate's Colleges
