National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) 2014

Introduction

The University of Delaware (UD) is participating in the 2014 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). The NSSE is a national data collection conducted annually by the Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research. The NSSE has a number of partners including the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, the Association of American Colleges and Universities, and the Lumina Foundation for Education. The benchmark study is directed at measuring the extent to which students are engaged with faculty, with each other, and with their studies in educationally effective activities. It examines the extent to which they read and write, make use of technology, and engage in a broad range of learning activities. NSSE’s guiding premise is that student participation in these activities at reasonable levels is a meaningful proxy for collegiate quality. The NSSE is administered to first-year and senior students. The NSSE provides UD with invaluable information that helps us better understand and improve students’ experiences at UD. This important survey touches on many different aspects of student engagement at UD such as level of academic challenge, learning with peers, experiences with faculty, campus environment, and high impact practices. This year’s survey also contains questions about student experiences with writing and global perspectives.
