9/26/09: ICECP Coaches Visit White House and Washington, D.C.

DCOn Saturday, the participants of ICECP travelled to the nation's capital to see the sites and enjoy a trip together before they head out to their respective apprenticeship sites.

While in Washington, D.C., the coaches toured the White House and posed for a picture outside. They also took a short bus tour of the city, led by Steve Amster, the international projects coordinator at UDel and organizer of the day's activities.

"I enjoyed the tour of the White House," said Harun Sesay, the national basketball team assistant coach in Sierra Leone. "I also got to meet a fellow Sierra Leonean in D.C."

After Amster's guided tour, the group took off by foot to explore on their own. Sites visited included the Capitol building, Washington Monument, the National Air and Space Museum, the Museum of Natural History and the Lincoln Memorial.

"The Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial were my favorites," said Haili Ripley, the women's national team coach in American Samoa. "I have a 14-year-old son, and I want him to visit D.C. too because there is so much history there."

Misshame Anareme, a basketball coach from Togo, shares Ripley's sentiment. He said he got to see many of the things he studied about in school in person, such as the Washington Monument.

"My professor used to talk about [Washington]. She said, 'If you ever get the chance, go," he said. "I'm glad I had that opportunity while in the US."
