10/1/09: Apprenticeship Sites: Judo

The ICECP judo coaches are throwing down in South Florida. Their apprenticeship is at the North Miami Judo Training Center, located in Margate, FL.

The club is run by German Velasco and Jhonny Prado. Velasco is an assistant coach on the US national team and spent much of Wednesday with his ICECP guests, who include Ian Weithers (Barbados), Tatenda Guta (Zimbabwe), Igor Paskoski (Macedonia) and Nabil Elalem (Libya).

“We spoke about his way of work, his coaching philosophy and shared some experiences. It was excellent,” Paskoski said.

The ICECP coaches also met with Gerry Navaro, the president of Florida Judo, Inc. North Miami is a Florida Judo-sanctioned club, and Navarro is setting up trips to other sanctioned clubs for the ICECP coaches’ remaining time in Florida. The visits to additional clubs will allow the Weithers, Guta, Paskoski and Elalem to meet more coaches, observe and participate in junior and masters training sessions and broaden their knowledge of coaching judo even more.
