1.  What common themes unite the excerpts from Sukhanov, the Petrograd Soviet, and Kollontai?  What political and social visions are articulated?  What do the excerpts from "Daily Life under Stalin" tell us about life under Stalin? Finally, why is Shalamov's account critical for understanding Stalinism?

2.  Study the excerpts from Mussolini and Hitler and come to class with a composite definition of fascism.  What differences and similarities do you see in the two dictators’ vision of fascism?
