Mark W. McLeod specializes in modern Vietnamese history, from approximately 1802 to the present. He received his Ph.D. in Southeast
Asian History from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1988. Major works include The Vietnamese Response to French Intervention, 1862-1874 and, with Nguyen Thi Dieu, Culture and Customs of Vietnam. He is currently researching the intersections between culture and politics in nineteenth and twenty-century Vietnam.
