Online Performance Appraisal Instructions

 Date Due: 4/1/2013

The annual appraisal covers the time period from April 1 of the previous year through March 31 of the current year.

The appraisal provides a written record of the employee's major job duties, goals and competencies, as well as the supervisor's assessment of performance. It is designed to improve job understanding, encourage effective performance and establish goals that support unit and career development. In addition, the appraisal provides information to support merit salary determinations and other personnel actions. Supervisors are expected to be accurate and candid in their evaluation of employees. The appraisal will become part of the employee's permanent personnel file.

  • Q: Is the paper version of the Performance Appraisal still available?

    A: No, the paper version will no longer be accepted. All appraisals must be done in the performance appraisal system.

  • Q: How do I view the prior year's performance appraisals for my staff?

    A: Due to the redesign of the performance appraisal system, the employee must start their current year's performance appraisal and list you as the supervisor in order for you to see last year's performance appraisals.

  • Q: How do I select a supervisor for my performance appraisal?

  • A:
    1. Select Lookup.
    2. In the Lookup window, enter your supervisor's name.
    3. Select Next Step.
    4. Your supervisor's name should appear in a white box. Click on your supervisor's name so it is highlighted.
    5. Select Finish and Submit.

  • Q: Why did my Major Responsibilities and prior Year Goals not pre-populate?

  • A: An employee's major responsibilities and prior year goals will not pre-populate if an employee did not use the Performance Appraisal System last year.

  • Q: How do I add a Major Responsibility, Prior Year Goal, or Goals?

  • A: Under the last box in each section, there is a link to "Add a Major Responsibility", etc.

  • Q: How do I copy and paste text into the performance appraisal?

  • A: If you want to paste text form a word document, you will need to highlight the information in the word document and select copy. In the Performance Appraisal System, you will need to select the Word Paste icon (picture of the clipboard with the W) and when the insert window opens,select paste. Then select insert at the bottom of the window and the text will appear in the comments box.

  • Q: How do I use spell check?

    A: In each text box you will see an icon for spell check. The spell check will check the spelling in that particular box.

  • Q: Can I view my performance appraisal after I submitted it to my supervisor?

    A: An employee can view a copy of the performance appraisal that was sent to a supervisor by selecting the appropriate appraisal period under My Appraisals tab.

  • Q: What Add-On for Mozilla Firefox does not work with the Performance Appraisal System?

    A: Last year we encountered several individuals who had trouble saving their performance appraisal due to the Firefox Browser Highlighting. Please disable this add-on while completing performance appraisals.

  • Q: Not all of the editing options in the text box appear?

    A: Go back to the main menu and then re-enter.

  • Q: I shared the appraisal with the employee, but the appraisal still appears in my inbox?

    A: The appraisal will remain in your inbox until you have the in-person appraisal. This allows a supervisor to make any changes if needed after the in-person appraisal, and then to send the appraisal onto a reviewer or onto the employee for signature.

  • Q: Will Faculty appraisals be done with the new system?

    A: No, Faculty appraisals will continue to be done on the Faculty Appraisal Form

  • Q. I cannot paste text into my form and have it save. What can I do?

    A. You can make the site a trusted page by following the directions at http://www.udel.edu/ideacenter/howto/ietips.html


  1. Log into the system using the provided link: http://www.udel.edu/performanceappraisal


  2. Select “Create new appraisal”


  3. Lookup the Supervisor who will be completing your performance appraisal


  4. Complete the Major Responsibilities


  5. Complete the Self-Appraisal


  6. Complete the Prior-Year Goals/Objectives


  7. Complete Goal Setting Worksheet


  8. Once Steps 1 through 7 are completed – Submit Form


  1. The employee submits their portion of the appraisal to you. When you login, go to the "Appraisals Requiring My Attention" tab.


  2. Log into the system using the provided link: http://www.udel.edu/performanceappraisal


  3. Review major responsibilities, prior year goals, and current year goals. If all is in order, continue to Supervisor Narrative.


  4. If changes are required, return to employee for updates.


  5. Complete Supervisor Narrative which should include enough verbage that the employee explicity knows where and why they are doing well and not so well.


  6. Complete the Performance Ratings for each of the performance categories with an appropriate value of 1-5 or N/A.


  7. Review the current year goals and make changes as necessary. These changes should be discussed with the employee in the in-person interview.


  8. Complete the overall appraisal rating.


  9. Either share the form for employee review or send to others for review.

    This training workshop was offered to educate supervisors, managers and employees about the overall performance appraisal process and the revised appraisal form. The appraisal system has a new look and enhancements to provide easier access, improved communication and new reporting capability.
