First Year Requirements for Specific HESC Majors

All majors within the Exercise Sciences require a formal application process, which takes place at the end of the freshman year. Requirements vary depending upon the major. Below you will find the list of requirements – by major.

Major: Athletic Training

  • Minimum overall cumulative index of 2.5 for all undergraduate course work completed at the University of Delaware
  • Complete hours of direct observation in the University of Delaware athletic training room under the supervision of the athletic training faculty.
  • Three letters of recommendation. Students must obtain the University of Delaware Athletic Training Education Program Admission Recommendation Form fro the Director of the Program.
  • Completion of the Athletic Competencies Checklist for direct observation students
  • Successful interview with the Athletic Training Education Program Faculty
  • Submission of a written essay

Major: Exercise Science

Biomechanics and Exercise Physiology

  • A competitive cumulative GPA, preferably a 3.0
  • Successful completion of the following courses, CHEM 103, CHEM 104, BISC 207, BISC 208, HESC 205
  • If applying to Biomechanics concentration, must also complete MATH 241
  • Completion of the appropriate application form with essay

*BISC with lab is recommended during the first year for a total of 32 credits, in order to complete the program in eight semesters, but not required for admission to the program.

  • Minimal cumulative grade point average of 2.5 and major GPA of 2.75, including 28 credits of required course work above and all completed course work.
  • Completed PRAXIS I with a passing score prior to being admitted to the major
  • Endorsement of two HPE faculty on the Professional Disposition Assessment
  • Submission of a satisfactory Introductory Professional Portfolio (see Program Director for Details)
  • Acceptance into the program is based upon the stated criteria. Offers of admission into the Health and Physical Education Teacher Education Program are presented to those students who have demonstrated a commitment to teaching.

Major: Health Behavior Science

  • Successful completion of the following courses: HESC 155, HESC 160, ENGL 110, MATH, and Psychology or Sociology
  • Competitive GPA
  • Completion of appropriate application with essay
  • Submission of resume

Major: Sport Management

  • Successful completion of the following courses: HESC 202, HESC 155, ENGL 110, MATH, and Psychology or Sociology
  • Minimum 2.7 GPA
  • Completion of appropriate application with essay
  • Offers of admission into Sport Management are presented to those students who have demonstrated an aptitude and commitment to this field.
