Sport Management

The Sport Management major is designed for students who are interested in the management, marketing, finance, public relations and legal aspects of the sport industry. The major features a strong base of general education requirements in English, communication, humanities, business, mathematics, and social and natural sciences; major courses in sport marketing, sport finance, legal aspects of sport, event and facilities management in sport, media and community relation in sport, ethics in sport management, and leadership and administration; finally the program offers practical application experience through a supervised practicum experience within the University’s NCAA-Division 1 athletic department during the student’s senior year. The students complement their major by completing a minor in one of the following areas: legal studies, business, leadership, educational studies or coaching sciences, or another minor approved by their advisor.

Interest Groups: Entering freshmen and transfer students seeking admission into Sport Management are admitted to interest groups (SMI). Freshmen participating in an interest group are eligible to apply for admission to this major at the end of the freshman year.

What’s Special About The Program?

This program is designed to meet the published standards of the joint program review board from the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) and North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM). Students are encouraged to participate in study abroad programs. The faculty are viewed as the top scholars in the sport management discipline and participate in research projects with sport organizations around the United States and the world. Students have the opportunity to participate in these research projects.

Current Degree Requirements

How Do I Transfer Into This Major?

The department reviews applications from University of Delaware students who wish to change majors twice a year, with applications being accepted at the end of each Fall and Spring semester. Applications are available 30 days prior to each due date. Students are notified of admission decisions after semester grades are posted. Students not admitted to a major may apply again the following semester.

Sport Management Requires a Formal Application Process

A faculty admission committee for Sport Management will make decisions on acceptance based on the following criteria:

  • Successful completion (minimum grade C-) of the following Freshman year courses:
    • HESC 155 – Personal Health Management: An Approach for a Lifetime
    • HESC 202 – Foundations of Sport Management
    • ENGL 110 – Critical Reading and Writing
    • MATH
    • Psychology or Sociology
  • Minimum GPA of 2.7
  • Completion of appropriate application with essay
  • Demonstration of aptitude and commitment and understanding for career orientation.

**Fulfilling the requirements does not guarantee admittance to this major. Space is very limited and admission is very competitive.

Career Opportunities

Employment opportunities for Sport Management graduates are diverse and rewarding. Included in these opportunities are professional and minor league sport franchises, professional sporting events, intercollegiate athletic departments, sport marketing and sports event management companies, high school athletics, sport facility management, national and international governing bodies, and businesses that use sports to market their products. Students are also prepared to pursue graduate studies in sport management and other disciplines.

  • Sport Management
    Theories and philosophies associated with the management of the sport industry. Emphasis is placed on the application of subject areas such as marketing, law, finance, public relations and leadership to the sport industry. These competency areas are applied to sport industry segments such as professional sports, intercollegiate athletics, event/facility management, sport agencies, and sporting goods manufacturers.
