The Geography Department offers three undergraduate programs:
- The B.A.
in Geography is our most diverse degree, offering students
a chance to explore the entire range of geography without specialization, or to
specialize in some field if they choose. Besides exploring the topical content of
geography, this program offers a chance to
acquire technical skills, especially in the
areas of Geographic Information Science and
data-analysis techniques.
- Students interested in teaching geography at the high school level
should enter the B.A.
program in Geography Education, which adds courses in education
to the basic B.A. in Geography. This program leads to teacher certification for
the State of Delaware.
- Students interested primarily in physical geography,
climatology, or meteorology may consider the
B.S. program in Environmental Science.
This is an interdisciplinary program to which the Geography Department
contributes a number of courses and provides the Atmospheric Environment
specialization. It is strongly science-based, with an emphasis on building
research skills.
All geography programs are relatively small. Beyond our few introductory
courses that are offered as group requirements to the entire university,
you can be assured of small class sizes and
individual faculty attention.
The department also has three graduate
programs:
- The M.A.
in Geography is primarily focused on human geography, but
students have also undertaken projects in geography education or environment
and society.
- The M.S. in Geography
is focused on climatology, land-surface
processes and cold regions research. In both masters programs, an important purpose
is to learn research techniques, such as GIS, remote sensing, and spatial
data handling.
- The Ph.D. in Climatology
prepares students for the highest level of research in climatology, and
has been very successful in placing students in academic positions, as well
as in research positions within government and the private sector.
We encourage you to explore the links
to the programs that most suit your interests. Further information about
any of these programs can be requested from
