The Geography Department provides instruction and research in the broad discipline of geography, studying how physical, biological, and cultural processes shape the landscape in which we live and cause regions to differ from each other. We provide six different degree programs, an internationally known research agenda, and a long tradition of service and outreach in education and climatic data services.

The department has three graduate programs:

Graduate Program Policy

  • The M.A. in Geography is primarily focused on human geography, but students have also undertaken projects in geography education or environment and society.

  • The M.S. in Geography is focused on climatology, land-surface processes and cold regions research. In both masters programs, an important purpose is to learn research techniques, such as GIS, remote sensing, and spatial data handling.

  • The Ph.D. in Geography serves as the umbrella degree for advanced research over the entire field of physical geography and related geographic methods, and has been very successful in placing students in academic positions, as well as in research positions within government and the private sector.
