Method:  The CALM employs three primary methods of thaw depth measurements: 1) spatially-oriented direct thaw-depth measurements by mechanical probing at rectangular grids and/or transects of various size; 2) Thaw-tube measurements; 3) thaw depth is inferred from ground temperature measurements.  (For detailed explanation of measurement procedures see methodology section of this website. Geophysical sounding is also used at some of the sites.

Sites with spatially-oriented mechanical probing are presented in red font; sites with thaw tubes are shown in blue font; sites where thaw depths are inferred from ground temperature measurements are shown in black font.

The “Method” column indicates the primary method of thaw depth measurements:

Numbers represent the size of the grid (m). (1000 indicate a 1000m x 1000m regular grid)

P- mechanical probing at linier transects

T-ground temperature measurements

TT-thaw tube measurements;

G - geophysical methods (sounding)

B##-boreholes (## indicate the depth of the borehole in m, B35- 35m deep borehole)

Annual end-of season thaw depth: Annual values of thaw depth collected at the end of the thawing season (cm). For spatial-oriented observations (grids, transects) the average of all sampling points are presented. For single-point measurements (thaw tubes, ground temperatures) the values represent single measurement. The missing values are indicated by “-“
