Policies and Procedures Manual

Section: Personnel
Policy Number: 4-11
Policy Name: Administrative/Professional Staff Teaching Assignments
Date: January 2000 (Number Change)

  1. PURPOSE

To encourage teaching by administrative and professional staff that contributes to the enhancement of an academic program and/or to a staff member's professional development.

  2. POLICY

Administrative and professional staff may be encouraged to teach in the regular academic program or in the Continuing Education Division if their teaching makes a special contribution to the academic program and if it is difficult to find other instructors of equal competency. In addition, administrative and professional staff may teach in order to stay current in their field or for their own professional development. Individual must obtain approval of appropriate chairperson, dean, director or vice president prior to commitment to teach.

Administrative and professional staff at the director level or above, however, will not receive additional University compensation for this teaching. This includes all associate deans and those directors who have line responsibilities bearing some equivalence to deans. Assistant deans are eligible for extra compensation. Salaries of these individuals are based on their total contribution to the University.

Any teaching they do should be considered a part of their assignment for the year and should be taken into account in their annual review and evaluation.

Questions regarding this policy should be directed to the Provost's Office
