Policy Name: Salaried Staff Overtime/Compensatory Time

POLICY

Salaried staff employees required to work more than 37-l/2 and up to 40 hours per week shall be compensated with compensatory (straight) time off or given additional payment on a straight time basis. All overtime or compensatory (straight or OT) time requires the approval of the supervisor.

Compensatory (OT) time off or overtime pay for time worked in excess of 40 hours per week will be at the rate of time and one-half the regular straight time rate of pay. This rule also applies to all time worked on a designated holiday, in addition to holiday pay. Overtime may not be pyramided or paid twice for the same hours worked.

For the purposes of computing overtime, the work week shall begin at 12:01 a.m. Sunday and end 168 hours later. In addition, paid vacation days, paid holidays, paid sick leave days and workdays lost because of compensable on-the-job injuries in an employee's work week shall be counted as days worked.

When compensatory time off cannot be given, payment for the time worked will be at the appropriate hourly rate.

Compensatory (OT) Time

Salaried staff employees may accrue up to 240 hours, 480 hours for police officers, of compensatory (OT) time. Time accrued above the limit must be paid at time and one-half the employee's regular hourly rate. While an employee can not be forced to use compensatory (OT) time, compensatory time must be used prior to using vacation leave. (The maximum accruals for vacation will remain in effect.)

Compensatory (OT) time over 40 hours per week needs to be recorded separately from compensatory (straight) time. The records need to include any compensatory time that is compensated in cash.

These limitations do not apply to compensatory (Straight) time.
