Policy Name: SALARIED STAFF OFFICE COVERAGE
Offices of the University of Delaware should be sufficiently covered from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on regular work days to ensure service for students, employees and the general public. This includes the time of the normal University lunch break. Unit managers may need to organize flexible work-day assignments to maximize coverage during these hours. Exceptions must be approved by the appropriate vice president. Current policies and collective bargaining agreements that provide for a 37.5 hour work week remain in effect. Two 15-minute breaks are permitted during each work day. One such break should be taken in the morning and the other in the afternoon.
Supervisors will make every effort to balance office needs and employee interests in arranging work schedules to maintain 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. office coverage.
Depending on the size of the office unit and its service function, supervisors may use call forwarding, an answering machine or student workers to maximize office coverage at the noon hour or after 4:30 p.m. Ultimate responsibility for policy implementation rests with the appropriate vice president; the Vice President for Administration may be called upon to resolve issues associated with developing appropriate work schedules for salaried staff.
Police patrol of the University campus is provided by the Department of Public Safety on a twenty-four hour basis. Employees needing special assistance should contact the University police at any hour by calling 831-2222.
Employees requiring EMERGENCY POLICE, FIRE, or MEDICAL assistance should call 911 or use the Blue Light emergency telephones located throughout campus.
