The University provides for continuing income in the event of total disability to eligible employees through a group disability insurance program. Visiting employees are not eligible for this benefit.

There is no cost to the employee for the standard option which is 60% of covered monthly salary. Employees may choose the high option (66 2/3% of covered monthly salary) and pay the difference between the University's contribution for the standard option and the cost of the high option. Options can be changed only during the flexible benefits enrollment period or if the employee has a qualifying life event as defined in the Flexible Benefits Book. This disability payment is a percentage of salary less social security disability and other employer-sponsored disability benefits.

If illness or injury involves total disability of a permanent nature or causes absence from work for more than six months, eligible employees may apply for disability benefits. It is University policy to continue salary during waiting periods for disability income to begin. See DISABILITY (TOTAL) BENEFITS SALARY CONTINUATION policy for details.

Individuals should advise their supervisors if unable to work due to illness or injury and provide medical certification of their disabling condition. The Supervisor or Employee contacts the Benefits Office who coordinates the required paperwork.
