Policy Name: Policy on University Seal and Coat-of-Arms
Date: September 1982
Revisions: June 5, 1989; April 1, 1996; July 1, 2005

The University Seal shall be used only on official documents stipulated by the President of the University (e.g., diplomas, contracts, disbursements).

The Coat-of-Arms is a double circle surrounding a shield. The color of the top half of the shield is blue (PMS #287) with a yellow (PMS #109) sun. The color of the bottom half of the shield is yellow (PMS #109) with a white open book, University of Delaware wordprint and the year 1743. This shall be the preferred official identifying mark of the University of Delaware for promotional purposes (e.g., University stationery, publications, jewelry, signet rings, apparel). However, where aesthetically more desirable, the shield may be used without the double circle, (e.g., University ties).

The University reserves the right of proprietorship of the University Seal and the Coat-of-Arms. There shall be no unauthorized use of either mark. Both are registered with the State of Delaware and the Coat -of-Arms has Federal Registration.

Responsibility for control of the use of the Coat-of-Arms shall be delegated to the following, with e-mail notification of each use to the Associate Vice President for Administrative Services:

Assistant to the President and Director, Public Relations
Associate Vice President for Administrative Services
Manager, Publications
Director, Supporting Services

These individuals shall monitor the use of the Coat-of-Arms to ensure the authenticity of the mark, the appropriateness of the goods upon which it is to be applied and that the mark is applied only on goods being manufactured for the University or its agents.
