The basic certificate course addresses core competencies defined by the National Injury and Violence Prevention Training Initiative.

Course Goals

Individuals who complete the basic certificate course will be able to:

  • distinguish between intentional and unintentional injury using the public health framework.
  • use existing injury data to explain the “who, when, where, what and how” of unintentional injuries.
  • analyze risk behaviors, protective factors, and mechanisms of injury associated with the “why” of the most prevalent unintentional injuries.
  • discover and use available resources for injury prevention interventions.
  • implement appropriate injury prevention initiatives for target populations.
  • evaluate the impact of injury prevention initiatives on injury prevention outcomes.
  • develop partnerships with others involved in injury prevention.

Course Format

Each of the eight CD-ROM modules explains how to plan and implement strategies for preventing various types of injuries. Modules include: a pretest, content related to the public health approach and a mechanism of injury, case studies, resources to access via the course web site, and a summary of content. Following completion of the eight modules, participants will take an online multiple choice post test.
