Keynote: Dr. Terry Richmond and Dr. Zane Robinson Wolf
We are pleased to have Dr. Terry Richmond and Dr. Zane Robinson Wolf as our keynote speakers for our conference: Take Time Out for Evidence-based Practice!
Dr. Richmond is an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania and holds a secondary appointment as Associate Professor of Nursing in Surgery in the School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She was the first director of the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research interests have focused on creating safer communities through the systematic reduction of firearm injury and all injuries and on improving recovery following serious injury. She is currently funded by the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Addiction to study Alcohol, Firearms and Adolescent Gunshot Injury Risk and the National Institutes of Mental Health to examine the development of depression and related psychiatric disorders following injury and their effects on disability and quality of life. Dr. Richmond is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and currently co-chairs the Expert Panel for Acute and Critical Care. Dr. Richmond has served on the board of directors of the American Association of Critical Care Nursing (AACN) and the AACN Certification Corporation. Over her career, she has published over 65 papers in prominent medical and nursing journals and contributed to numerous textbooks.
Dr. Zane R. Wolf is the Dean and Professor of the School of Nursing at La Salle University. For more than 20 years, Dr. Wolf’s research interests have focused on nursing rituals, caring, medication errors, and the experience of chronic illness. She has explored these areas using a qualitative research approach and has published her findings extensively in a variety of peer-reviewed journals and books. Dr. Wolf is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, a member of the American Nurses' Association, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), and the International Association for Human Caring. Currently, she is the editor for the International Journal for Human Caring. Dr. Wolf is a member of the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) and served on the Board of Directors from 1994-2005. Her seminal research on medication errors was funded by Merck and recognized by STTI in 2001 when she received the prestigious Research Dissemination Award.
Please join us to hear both these nurses’ personal journeys to evidence-based practice through research.

Session descriptions:
Concurrent Session #1 - Panel Presentation: Original Research
This session features 3 nurse researchers who will present their work during this eclectic and interactive session! Topics will include women’s health, Parkinson’s disease, and the professional nurse environment. Presenters will share the challenges and rewards of conducting nursing research.
Concurrent Session #2 - Call for Abstracts .. and then what?
Preparation of a high-quality abstract, whether for a paper presentation, a poster, or publication; requires strict attention to details. This session will discuss the components of an abstract, provide examples of practical strategies to emphasize each of those components, and then address the “little extras” that make the difference between an accepted or rejected abstract.
Concurrent Session #3 - Show Me the Money: Funding Your Project
Many research and research related projects just need that little bit of money to make them happen! Funding for small projects is available … you just need to look in the right places. This session will provide information on how to develop a winning request for funding in order to make that project a reality.
Concurrent Session #4 - EBP at the Bedside: Fantasy or Reality? A Top Ten List
Nurses are being inundated with the importance of evidence-based practice. However, are we just “talking the talk” or have we managed to “walk the walk” of EBP? Participants are challenged to examine their own practice as the speakers highlight ten areas of evidence-supported practice that are not consistently making it to the bedside .
Concurrent Session #5 - Panel Presentation: Original Research
This session features 3 nurse researchers who will present their work during this eclectic and interactive session! Topics will include monitoring sedation, bariatric nursing, and animal assisted therapy. Presenters will share the challenges and rewards of conducting nursing research.
Mastery Session #1 - Search Secrets: Finding the Evidence
Key steps in implementing evidence-based practice include asking searchable questions and finding the best evidence. Formulating a searchable question and conducting a literature search will be key topics in this workshop. This session will explore both MEDLINE and CINAHL and provide hands-on opportunities to identify research studies and related evidence to help answer a clinical question.
Master Session #2 - Unraveling the ABC’s of the IRB
One of the key steps in conducting research is obtaining approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB). This workshop will demystify the IRB by providing a brief history of the evolution of IRBs and exploring the ABC's of the submission process. Opportunities to review the required IRB paperwork as well as the online Human Subjects education program will be provided.
