Community Disaster and System Stress: A Sociological Perspective

J. EUGENE HAAS AND THOMAS E. DRABEK

Social and Psychological Factors in Stress, ed. by Joseph E. McGrath (NY: Holt, Rinehart, and Winston, 1970): 264-286

Abstract:

In this paper we outline a sociological approach to the study of organizational stress. Following a brief review of the relevant literature, a conceptual framework is introduced and discussed at some length. Illustrations which point to the utility of the various concepts are drawn form the field and laboratory work conducted by the authors while on the staff of Ohio State University. Finally, some basic theoretical and methodological problems are discussed with possible solutions suggested.
