Social Response to Global Climate Change: Prospects for Natural Hazard Reduction JOANNE M. NIGG AIP Conference Proceedings of the World at Risk: Natural Hazards and Climate Change, ed. by Rafael Bras (New York, NY: American Institute of Physics, 1993): 289-294
Abstract: This paper provides a sociological perspective on societal
responses to disasters (extreme natural hazard events). A definition
is provided for a "social," as opposed to a physical, disaster event.
Several factors are identified which affect the ways societies adapt to
hazard agents-societal resources, realistic expectations, vulnerability,
and past experience. 'Me ability of societies to anticipate future
intensified or new disaster events under conditions of uncertainty is also
addressed.
