Abstract: In this paper we do two things. We first briefly indicate the need and the value of doing cross-cultural research on disasters and detail something about the nature of the studies so far undertaken; implying thereby some of their limitations. We conclude by sketching a framework which might be used to start to systematise cross-cultural studies of disasters, suggesting some research priorities and indicating how such work might be most efficiently organised. As such, this is a review of the state-of-the-arts and neither develops theory nor presents findings on the social and behavioural aspects of natural and technological disasters.
