Student Recruitment and Selection

Strategies

Ten undergraduate students will be selected, each year, as trainees for the DRC-REU Program. Students will be recruited at the national level, including institutions of higher education in the United States and Puerto Rico . An informational letter and application form describing the REU Program will be developed and distributed to social science students and faculty in targeted institutions throughout the United States . In order to ensure that we obtain applications from institutions with a high enrollment of minority students and from universities where undergraduate students are not actively exposed to research, we have identified a number of schools from which we will actively recruit undergraduate students generally and minorities and women in particular. Also, we will identify one or more faculty members in these institutions to serve as our liaisons in that particular institution, helping to disseminate information on the DRC-REU Program and identifying potential candidates for the program. Additionally, we will request that targeted department chairs announce the DRC-REU Program to their faculty and students. DRC's website will also provide detailed information on the REU Program, including application materials.

Student Selection Process

Students must have completed their sophomore year by the time they enter the DRC-REU program. Applicants must submit the following documentation: 1) completed application form; 2) academic transcript(s); 3) essay on research interests, previous experience/training (if any), particular interest in the disaster research field, graduate school plans, and how participation in the REU Program will contribute to the student's academic and professional development; and, 4) two letters of recommendation from faculty members. The following eligibility criteria will be used by the selection committee:

  • Students should have declared a Social Science major (e.g., Anthropology, Geography, Psychology, Political Science, Sociology or Urban Affairs, among others). Students must have completed at least 12 credits in the Social Sciences
  • Students must have completed their sophomore year of their undergraduate program by the commencement of the SRI
  • Students should have a minimum GPA of 3.00
  • Particular attention will be given to student's overall achievement in the Social Sciences (minimum grade point average of 3.00 in social science courses)
  • The applicants' essay and the letters of recommendation will be used to gauge their interest or commitment to research generally, and in disaster research specifically, and their graduate career plans
  • Selected students must be US citizens or permanent residents
