Effective September 1, 2004 Rodriguez was appointed to the Disasters

Roundtable Steering Committee at the National Academies' National

Research Council.

 

DRC welcomes Tricia Wachtendorf as a Core Faculty member and

Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice.

Although Wachtendorf has been at DRC for several years, she begins

this new appointment in September 2004. DRC also DRC welcomes

several new graduate students. Incoming student Jenniffer Santos as well

as returning student Dan Marks joined DRC in September.

 

Benigno Aguirre has two publications accepted for Fall 2004:

"Homeland  Security Warnings: Lessons Learned and Unlearned" in the

International Journal of Mass Emergencies and Disasters and "Los

Desastres en Latinoamérica: Vulnerabilidad y Resistencia" in Revista

Mexicana de Sociologia.

 

An article by Havian Rodriguez will appear in the September 2004 issue

of Social Forces, titled "A 'Long Walk to Freedon' and Democray: Human

Rights, Globalization, and Social Injustice."

 

Tricia Wachtendorf served as discussant for the Disasters Regular

Session at the Annual Meeting of the American Sociological Association

in San Francisco, August 15, 2004. She was also recorder for a session

on the National Institute for Standards and Technoloby (NIST) World

Trade Center Investigation: Progress and Findings at the 29th Annual

Workshop on Hazards Research and Applications in Boulder CO, July

13, 2004.

 

Brian Monahan gave two presentations in San Francisco this summer.

He presented "From Ground Zero to Ground Hero: Emergent Public

Drama and September 11, 2001" on August 13, 2004 at the Annual

Meeting of the Society for the Study of Social Problems and "Response

and Recovery at Ground Zero as Emergent Public" on August 15, 2004

at the Annual Meeting of the American Sociological Association.

 

Joseph Trainor made two presentations on August 15, 2004 in San

Francisco, including "Searching for a System Multi-organizational

Coordination in the September 11th World Trade Center Search and

Rescue Response " at the Annual Meeting of the American Sociological

Association and "Stakeholders, Earthquakes, and Public Policy:

Consistency and Variation in Framing Earthquake Mitigation Importance"

at the Annual Meeting of the Society for the Study of Social Problems.

 

On July 14th, Rodriguez served as plenary speaker at the 29th Hazards

Research and Applications Workshop in Boulder, CO, where he

presented "The Role, Contributions, and Complexities of

Interdisciplinary Research: A Holistic Approach to Hazards and

Disasters."

 

On July 13, 2004, Joanne Nigg presented "Framework for a Bachelor's-

Level Degree in Emergency Management" in a session on Higher

Education and the Hazards Manager of the 21st Century at the 29th

Annual Hazards Research and Applications Workshop in Boulder, CO.

 

On July 14, 2004, William Donner presented "Non-Technological

Problems in Emergency Management Decision-Making" at the 29th

Hazards Research and Applications Workshop in Boulder, CO.

 

DRC in the News!

On June 10th, 2004, the Disaster Research Center (DRC) was featured in

Crossroads, a special section of The Delaware News Journal. This center

spread reported on the formation of DRC, some of its most recent

research projects and findings, the impact the Center has had on

emergency management, and how the center approaches the study of

disasters from a sociological perspective. Havian Rodriguez, Benigno

Aguirre, Tricia Wachtendorf, and Russell Dynes were interviewed for the

story. The News Journal also interivewed Marcia Nickle who is an

emergency planner with New Castle County Emergency Management.

Nickle worked as a research assistant with DRC and obtained both her

B.A. and M.A. from the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice.

 

On June 7, 2004, Havidan Rodriguez presented "The Role of Science,

Technology, and the Media in the Communication of Risk and

Warnings" at a congressional briefing focused on "Risk and Crisis

Communication: Building Trust and Explaining Complexities When

Emergencies Arise." The briefing was sponsored by the Consortium of

Social Science Associations, the National Communication Association,

the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. His presentation was titled "The Role of

Science, Technology, and Media in the Communication of Risk and

Warnings." Rodriguez presented "The Integrating Data Analysis (IDA)

Project: Lessons Learned at the "Addressing Quantitative Literacy

Gap" Conference at the Bolger Center in Potomac, MD, June 17-19,

2004.

 

Gabrial Santos and Benigno Aguirre presented their paper "A Critical

Review of Emergency Evacuation Simulation Models" to the National

Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The workshop "Building

Egress Strategies" was part of a two-day seminar "Building Occupant

Movement During Fire Emergencies" and was held in Gaithersburg, MD,

June 10-11, 2004. Their presentation will be published in the workshop
