The Department offers Bachelor of Science Degrees in Athletic Training and Exercise Science. Students in the Exercise Science major choose one of three concentrations: Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics and Motor Control, or Medical Scholars. Honors degree options are available for both majors. Minors are also available in Exercise Science and Strength and Conditioning.
The Athletic Training major is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). This major prepares students for taking the BOC exam for certification as an Athletic Trainer (ATC.) A degree in this area provides career opportunities in a variety of settings, including sports medicine clinics, high schools, colleges/universities, professional sports organizations, physical therapy clinics, and others. This degree also allows students to pursue advanced degrees in sports medicine, the allied health sciences (e.g. Physical Therapy), and the exercise sciences.
The Exercise Science major is a pre-professional program that prepares students for successful entry into post-graduate programs in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant, Medical, or Dental Schools, or for graduate programs in Exercise Science. The major is rigorously science-based and includes all of the pre-requisite courses for Physical Therapy. The Medical Scholars concentration also includes all pre-requisite courses for Medical School.
The Minor in Strength and Conditioning: prepares students for working with athletes in a strength and training/conditioning setting. These settings may include opportunities in high schools, colleges/universities, and at the professional level. A required practicum provides hands-on experience in a strength and conditioning setting. The Minor in Exercise Science is for students with a strong interest in exercise science who have selected a different major.
