Geology

Geology is a broad interdisciplinary science that involves the study of Earth and its history. Geologists may explore for new mineral or oil resources, work on environmental problems, do research, or teach. They often divide their time between work in the field, the laboratory, and the office.

At the University of Delaware undergraduates can major in geology, geophysics, or earth science education. It is also possible to get a degree in environmental science with a concentration in geology.

A career as a professional geologist usually requires graduate training. Geologists can find employment with environmental consulting companies, federal and state geological surveys or other government agencies, petroleum or mining companies, highway departments, oceanographic institutes, or as secondary or college teachers.

Geologists gather and interpret data about the Earth for the purpose of increasing our knowledge about natural resources and Earth processes. Geologists provide basic information required for establishing policy for resource management and environmental protection.
