The Career Success Plan - Step 2:
Explore Career Options and Academic Majors
  • Research your career options
Visit the Resource Centers in the Career Services or the Counseling Center for career information on hundreds of occupations. Investigate the educational requirements, responsibilities, employment outlook, and salary for different careers. Review publications that analyze current job market trends.

  • Attend Career Services' Events
Fall Career Expo (formerly the Job Jamboree) is held in the fall with more than 150 employers participating and the Spring Career Expo is held in the spring with more than 65 companies participating. Twelve different job fairs are offered each year, many geared to specific academic disciplines. Learn about career opportunities and find out what education requirements, work experience, and skills employers are looking for.

  • Attend Major Mania
This fair is held each spring with representatives from the academic major areas available to discuss your career interests. Learn how majors relate to career choices.

  • Discuss majors with your academic advisor or professors
Learn more about meeting the requirements of appropriate majors and how you can achieve your career goals.

  • Conduct informational interviews
After narrowing your career interests arrange brief (15 to 20 minute) informational meetings with professionals who work in the career fields of interest to you. And use your network of family, friends, advisors, and professors to help you identify possible contacts. Contact Career Services to learn more about informational interviews and networking.

  • Check out the "Alumni Career Network" Website
Spend some time on the phone or in person with an alum in your field of interest.

  • Contact professional associations Many associations related to your career interests produce information about their professions which is available on their websites. Return to the Major Resource Kits for possible links to professional associations in various fields.
