Environmental Soil Science

Environmental Soil Science (ESOS) offers the opportunity to study the environment with a focus on one of our most important natural resources - soil. Some questions that soil science seeks to answer include: How do chemical and physical reactions in the soil effect our water supply? What impact do acid rain and global warming have on the quality of the soil in which we grow our food? Is it possible to use soil microorganisms to remediate soil pollution? Issues like these are part of the diverse field of soil science and offer exciting challenges to students interested in solving environmental problems. Majors in ESOS take courses in plant science, chemistry, physics, geology, and soil science to develop sound, expert, technical knowledge.

Career opportunities for Environmental Soil Science majors are with consulting firms, state and federal agencies, and industry. Specialists in soil science are needed in areas such as water quality, soil ecology, wetland ecology, and recycling technology. As with most science disciplines, graduate degrees greatly increase your chances for advancement in government and industry. Qualified students from our program go on to pursue graduate degrees in areas such as soil chemistry, soil physics, environmental chemistry and geology. Whatever your goal, we encourage you to participate in our job search workshops and career days, to seek an internship, to develop your communication skills, and to learn to network with prospective employers.

For more information on any of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources majors, contact the Office of Academic Programs at 831-2508 or stop by 104 Townsend Hall.
