Teacher Education Programs & Educational Studies

Responsibility for the coordination of the teacher education programs rests with the University Council on Teacher Education (UCTE). Teacher education programs in specific areas are administered by the Colleges of Agriculture and Natural Resources; Arts and Sciences; Human Services, Education and Public Policy; and Health Sciences. The University of Delaware is guided by a unified conceptual framework. Programs aim to develop teachers who are reflective practitioners serving diverse communities of learners as scholars, problem solvers and partners. For more information on teacher education programs, students who wish to prepare themselves as certified teachers should consult the faculty advisor for the specific area of certification sought, as follows:

Students who complete a University of Delaware Approved Teacher Education Program receive an institutional recommendation for teacher certification. To be certain of the University's recommendation, students must complete the Approved Program in its entirety. Upon receiving the University's recommendation, students must apply for certification through the individual state's Department of Education. Most states require that students pass a standardized test to qualify for teacher certification. The Delaware Center for Teacher Education (DCTE) has information available to students on the testing requirements and certification procedures.

EDUCATIONAL STUDIES

This program includes the study of education as part of a liberal arts curriculum. Course work provides students with knowledge about the fundamental structure of the educational process. Flexibility of requirements allows students to build a program based on their special interests and apply the study of education to careers in education outside the classroom. A senior thesis, working closely with faculty, provides intensive exposure to current educational issues and opens the door to career opportunities. (The major is only available to internal transfers.) For more information, contact Dr. David Blacker, Coordinator of the Educational Studies Program (831-8588 or blacker@udel.edu).
