Describe your current position and what led to your job.
General Manager, Food Services - Duke University Medical Center. I have worked for Aramark Healthcare for six years in hospital food & facility management, and this was a promotion to the most senior position within a location managed by Aramark.
What has been the most rewarding/challenging moment in your career?
Rewarding - Being thanked by a patient who was about to pass away, because their final meal was made special by my culinary team. Challenging - Managing a department that was represented by four different labor unions.
What is the best career advice you have received?
Assess your areas of responsiblity quickly & take action when entering a new role. Your first and only opportunity to set the tone of your leadership is in the first 90 days. Act with integrity.
What would you recommend to someone interested in working in your field?
Be prepared. Take the time to work in other positions that lead to your desired position, it will give you the experience necessary as you move further up the career ladder.
What skills are necessary or what prepared you the most for your career?
Necessary skills: Adaptability, Ability to learn new tasks quickly, and Organization. The ability to multi-task is an understatement, one needs the ability to juggle about 20 things at once in a way that makes sense!
